چکیده

Two major training techniques for wireless channels are time division multiplexed (TDM) training and superimposed training. For the TDM schemes with regular periodic placements (RPP), the closedform expression for the steady-state minimum mean square error (MMSE) of channel estimate is obtained as a function of placement for Gauss-Markov flat fading channels. We then show that, among all periodic placements, the single pilot RPP scheme (RPP-1) minimizes the maximum steady-state channel MMSE. For BPSK and QPSK signaling, we further show that the optimal placement that minimizes the maximum bit error rate (BER) is also RPP-1. We next compare the MMSE and BER performance under the superimposed training scheme with those under the optimal TDM scheme. It is shown that while the RPP-1 scheme performs better at high SNR and for slowly varying channels, the superimposed scheme outperforms RPP-1 in the other regimes. This demonstrates the potential for using superimposed training in relatively fast time-varying environments.

Optimal Pilot Placement for Semi-Blind Channel Tracking of Packetized Transmission over Time-Varying Channels∗

The problem of optimal placement of pilot symbols is considered for single carrier packet-based transmission over time varying channels. Both flat and frequency-selective fading channels are considered, and the time variation of the channel is modeled by Gauss-Markov process. The semi-blind linear minimum mean-square error (LMMSE) channel estimation is used. Two different performance criteria, ...

Pilot Placement for Time-Varying MIMO OFDM Channels with Virtual Subcarriers

The rapid time-variation of a fading multipath environment can impair the performance of multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO OFDM). This paper proposes a pilot placement method for MIMO OFDM systems under time-varying channels with the guard band. The time-varying channel is described by complex exponential basis expansion model (BEM). We discuss the ...

Optimal Placement of Training for Channel Estimation and Tracking

The problem of training symbol placement for the estimation of block-fading channel is first considered. The channel is frequency selective with correlated random taps. The Cramér-Rao Bound (CRB) on the mean square error (MSE) of channel estimators is derived and minimized with respect to the pilot symbols and their placement. It is shown that, among all orthogonal pilot sequence placements, th...

Pilot Tone-based Channel Estimation for OFDM Systems with Transmitter Diversity in Mobile Wireless Channelsy

This paper describes a channel estimation and tracking scheme for OFDM MIMO systems based on pilot tones. The mean square error of the proposed scheme is derived, and through this we derive optimal training sequences and placement of the pilot tones. It is shown in this paper that minimum mean square (MMSE) channel estimation is obtained with equipowered, equispaced, orthogonal and phase shift ...
